Our guests often ask ‘where is the best destination for a family ski trip?’ Traveling and skiing with kids can be daunting, especially overseas! We thought we would share our favourite family-friendly ski destinations with you. Our first one is one of our favourite European destinations, Jungfrau Region in Switzerland. Jungfrauregion, Switzerland
Family friendly ski resorts don’t come any better than this: Our kids hopped out of bed, anticipating another huge Swiss breakfast of juices, sliced meats and cheese, fruit, cereal, and eggs. Mom anticipated coffee.
Fuelled up, the kids lead the way out of the hotel to the lifts. And by “lifts”, I mean “train”, because this is the Jungfrauregion, and trains are how they do things here. Trains, and also gleaming, fast, modern cable cars…..
Kids love trains. Instead of “are we there yet?”, it’s “can’t we stay in on the next stop?”
No, we can’t, because we’re at the top, and ski school is right here. Two of Switzerland’s top instructors are waiting in the falling snow. The giant mountains, cute cabins and glorious scenery are visible from time to time. The kids are stoked to the point of open mouthed silence. And our daughter, 8 years old, is never silent! Their instructors instantly have the kids’ attention. This is going to be an epic day.
Mom and dad, kid free, hop on the chair and up toward the Eiger. The cloud clears, we drop into waist deep powder and lay out turns under the NortHFace of the Eiger. A skier’s dream ticked off right there, and it’s not even lunch time. We cruise perfectly groomed runs to Wengen, then hop on the fast cable car back to Kleine Scheidegg to pick up the kids.
Over schnitzels and rosti they tell us about their morning: awesome instructors,so cool, skied powder, skied black runs, want to show us what they learned, and they do. We watch, stunned, as our babies ski perfectly controlled turns down untracked powder. The mountains are clear. Yes. This was a truly memorable ski day for everyone in a perfect family resort.
